Noise Hunters Devlog 19 - Vertical Slice

Hello [Code_Name: MEVYE] [Location: CLASSIFIED], welcome back!

Today we will see how we ended up with our Vertical Slice of Noise Hunters!

First, we must see what is a Vertical Slice(VS) in game development: VS is usually referred as a milestone, in which is demonstrated the progress across all components of a project. This can compared with a slice of cake, it contains all the final layers of the product but is not the entire cake.

For Noise Hunters we aimed to get one complete level, from start to finish. However, this didn't went as smoothly. As we mentioned in previous posts, Noise Hunters was conceived a much different scope, which was unrealistic for us and had to reduce. This constant reduction meant constant change in our plans throughout the VS. The constant change in the planning of the VS is a dangerous thing, because most of the time, the team won't be able to finish in time, as there will be no margin of error.

Like all the projects, unexpected problems will appear and this forced us to make rushed decisions to reach VS. In real projects where there is money and time on the line, it's more valued to have a finished/closed product ready for launch, than an unfinished project that doesn't bring money in. Thanks to today's technology, game studios are able to make patches to fix bugs and/or add new content after launch!

Back to Noise Hunters, in our VS level we demonstrated most of the mechanics that would be used in the game, plus the flow of the game. At this point we shifted the game to a more experience oriented, rather than a conventional game. We demonstrated the use of the Dagger and it's interactions with the environment, enemies and puzzles.

VS is one of the most important milestones in game development, because it shows the progress of the project and if there is a possibility of success when the game finished. As the VS game is a fragment of a "finished" game, from that point onward the experience won't differ too much for the player that gets the game on launch.

Thanks for reading and don’t make any noise! 🤫
