Noise Hunters Devlog 26 - Choosing 3D models

Hello [Code_Name: MEVYE] [Location: CLASSIFIED], welcome back!

Today we will see how we chose 3D models in online retailers!

As we mentioned in a previous post, we use external assets for the visual department mainly. We used mainly Sketchfab and CGTrader, as this webpages are specialised in 3D models and have great filters for searching.

For searching models we have to filters first several characteristics:

  • Rigged: we want models that already have a rig done, so we can use them in tools such as UMotion to animate easily and without extra work.
  • Lowpoly: Not to mix with "low poly style", by this we mean 3D models that have low polygon count so it doesn't destroy Unity. A normal number usually is around 40,000 - 100,000 polygons, depending on the needs.
  • Avoid copyrighted material. Normally in this type of webpages you can find fan-made characters of famous movies or games, avoid them so you don't get in legal trouble if you want to sell your videogame.
  • Animated: This is not required but is a welcomed addition if the model comes with animations that can be used in the project.
  • Compatibility: Some models are listed as Unity compatible, this is a plus. But be careful with Unreal only assets, as this are only used in Unreal and cannot bet exported to other engines.

As a tip, if you find a model you really like or fits perfectly your game, check out the artist. Most of the times they usually have more assets that follow the same style and can solve you a big problem. In addition, once you bought a model, don't doubt in message the artist if you have any doubt in how the model works or how you can modify them, most of the times they will answer you gladly.

Thanks for reading and don’t make any noise! 🤫
